Despite Full Participation in Practice, Ty Montgomery Not Guaranteed to Play

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery (ribs) was a full participant in practice Wednesday. While normally that would be a good indication that he would be ready for next Sunday, Green Bay may be extra cautious with the running back. Aaron Jones has emerged as an effective runner, reducing the urgency for Montgomery to return. Montgomery broke several ribs in Week 4 and there is no clear time table for when he will return. Despite the injury, Montgomery is able to move well and there is little risk in utilizing him in practice. However, he could further injure himself if hit hard during a game. It is not clear if he will regain the starting job with the emergence of Jones, but he will have a significant role in the offense. Montgomery was starting to break down under a heavy workload before the injury, but he should be more effective in limited touches. Jamaal Williams does not figure to have much of a role in Green Bay’s offense moving forward, particularly once Montgomery returns.
